Valtrex (Valaciclovir) SHORT DESCRIPTION
Valtrex is used to treat certain herpes infections, including herpes zoster (the painful rash known as shingles), genital herpes, and herpes cold sores on the face and lips. Valtrex should not be used by anyone with a weak immune system, such as those with HIV infection or those who have undergone a bone marrow or kidney transplant. The effects of Valtrex during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not been adequately studied. Methods other than breast feeding should be considered if Valacyclovir must be taken while nursing. Valacyclovir showed no effects on the fetus in animal studies, however, there has been no adequate evaluation of valacyclovir or (acyclovir) in pregnant women. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Probenecid (Benemid) and cimetidine (Tagamet) may reduce the kidney's clearance of Valacyclovir, leading to higher concentrations in the blood. Valacyclovir may be taken with or without food. If you are taking Valtrex for cold sores, you should start using it at the earliest signs of infection, such as tingling, itching, or burning. It is known, however, that among women taking acyclovir, concentrations of acyclovir in breast milk are about 4 times higher than in the mother's blood.
