Omnicef (Cefdinir) SHORT DESCRIPTION
Omnicef is a member of the family of antibiotics known as cephalosporins. It is used to treat mild to moderate infections, including: Acute flare-ups of chronic bronchitis Middle ear infections (otitis media) Throat and tonsil infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis) Pneumonia Sinus infections Skin infections. If you use antacids, iron supplements, or multivitamins containing iron, allow at least 2 hours between a dose of these products and a dose of Omnicef. The capsules or suspension can be taken with or without food. Cefdinir generally is well tolerated. For adults and adolescents 13 years and over, the maximum daily dose is 600 milligrams, regardless of the infection under treatment. You may need to take a different antibiotic. Omnicef, like other antibiotics, works best when there is a constant amount in the blood. Separating the administration of cefdinir and such antacids by 2 hours prevents this interaction. Cefdinir is active against a very wide spectrum of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus; Streptococcus pneumoniae ; Streptococcus pyogenes (the cause of strep throat ); Hemophilus influenzae; Moraxella catarrhalis; E.
